Daufuskie Island, SC
Daufuskie Island is part of the Gullah/Geechee Nation. It is the southern most island in South Carolina nestled just off the coast of Hilton Head Island. The Yemassee Indians were the original inhabitants and named the island "Daufuskie", which is thought to mean "land with a point". Europeans then came to the Island in the 16th & 17th centuries.
To see this marvelous piece of island paradise, you must take a relaxing, sight-indulging ride on a commercial ferry. Daufuskie's remote location keeps her quaint -unspoiled- island charm intact and her historical landmarks make her a great get-a-way for anyone. Visitors will marvel at the Antebellum structures that still stand throughout the island.*Daves Rossell, of *S.C.A.D., research on these structures highlights an urgent need to preserve them before they forever slip away into dust!
Island wide transportation is mainly by golf cart, especially within the private communities of Haig Point and Melrose / Daufuskie Island Resort & Breathe Spa. Commercial ferry services and/or tour operators also provide paid round trip passage. Fares may vary according to the provider, season and/or point of departure/arrival.
Gullah/Geeche Culture
The Gullah/Geechee Nation starts as far north as Jacksonville, NC and extends southward to Jacksonville, FL. Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation, and the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition work to keep the native Gullah/Geechee people on their lands and their culture alive.
The Gullah people are renown for their various art forms including storytelling, sweet grass basket weaving, foods and music.
Daufuskians are especially proud of their Gullah culture because it has allowed Daufuskie to remain unspoiled. So, I personally invite you to join me in celebrating Daufuskie's priceless Gullah Community and join in doing ALL!-we can to preserve it today so it will be here for countless generations to come.
